ROSANNE STERNBERG, NRHA'S NEWEST MILLION Dollar Owner, splits her time between her home country of Great Britain and Sterling Ranch in Aubrey, Texas. She is committed to furthering international competition as well as improving the quality of horses that carry the Sterling Ranch brand, which, unlike some brands signifying ownership, indicates that the horse was bred by the ranch.

Family Affair

It's somehow fitting that Sternberg earned the much sought-after Million Dollar Owner accolade in 2010, the year that the All-tech® FEI World Equestrian Games took place in Lexington, Kentucky, September 25 through October 10. Sternberg has always been supportive of international competition, often supplying competitors with quality horses, especially for the FEI World Reining Masters. At the 2010 WEG she has supplied most of the horses for her home country's team, five horses to be exact. Three are for family members: sister Francesca Sternberg, brother-in-law Doug Allen, daughter Jessica Sternberg, and one for young trainer Lee Rutter. The fifth horse is a substitute if needed. Fellow Great Britain team member Tammy Greaves is shipping her horse to Kentucky.

The Sternberg family's participation in international sport goes back to the 1980s when the western discipline of Reining was a little known sport in Europe. The Sterling riders fielded a team for the first all-western World Nations Cup. Later on, Rosanne was a British Reining Team member at the 2002 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez, Spain, the first time Reining was featured at the Games.

Special Influences

Among the mentors that Rosanne credits with influencing her are famed Quarter Horse breeder Carol Rose, who was the first to help Rosanne when she visited the United States. NRHA Hall of Fame inductee Bob Loomis, whose philosophy regarding the importance and influence of the dam's side of a horse's pedigree, was an early influence, and Rosanne adopted his philosophy as her own. Rosanne purchased horses from both Loomis and fellow Hall of Fame inductee Dick Pieper.

Special Horses

Rosanne's friendship and professional relationship with NRHA Professional Todd Crawford goes back to 1989, the same year that Nijomi Sonny Reb was foaled. Crawford acted as agent when she later purchased Nijomi Sonny Reb from Matt Flarida, who had much success in non pro competition with the stallion. Later Crawford won two American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Championships in Senior Reining (1997, 1998) on Sonny. With Rosanne riding Sonny, they were Silver Medalists at the first FEI European Championships (Sternberg recalled that 2011 incoming NRHA President and judge Allen Mitchels awarded her a score of 75). Sonny was also her mount at the 2002 WEG. He is the epitome of longevity, competing from 1994 through 2006 and a horse that has competed successfully on both sides of the Atlantic in open and non pro/amateur competition in NRHA, AQHA, and FEI-approved events. He was the 2000 European Amateur Reining Champion and AQHA High-Point Amateur Reining Champion breaking records by earning over 100 AQHA points in Reining that year.

Smart Spook (Smart Chic Olena x Sugarplum Spook x Grays Starlight) has to be Sternberg's most successful and well-known reining horse. The 2001 stallion was shown by NRHA Professional and Three Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida to win the 2004 Open NRHA Futurity and the 2005 Open NRHA Derby, as well as the 2005 AQHA World Championship in Junior Reining. Spook also earned six FEI World Reining Masters Gold Medals, three open and three restricted, with NRHA Professional and World Champion Rudi Kronsteiner in the saddle.
Tinsel Nic is a World Champion and a FEI Open Masters Champion. He was an NRHA Futurity finalist in 2002, and in 2003 won the intermediate open division at the National Reining Breeders Classic and the Canadian Reining Breeders Classic open championship with Dean Brown. In 2005, Tinsel Nic became AQHA Senior Reining World Champion and in 2006, ridden by Flarida, he earned a Gold Medal by winning the FEI World Reining Masters.

All four of the stallions standing at Sterling Ranch are AQHA World Champions and FEI Gold Medalists; Smart Spook, Nijomi Sonny Reb, and Tinsel Nic all belong to Rosanne. The fourth stallion is Hang Ten Surprize, who was 2006 World Equestrian Games Individual Gold Medalist, as well as an AQHA World Champion in Junior Reining, shown by NRHA Professional and Million Dollar Rider Duane Latimer. Hang Ten Surprize is owned by Manntana LLC.

What Does The Future Hold?
Rosanne's goals appear lofty, but for this ambitious lady are certainly achievable. She would like to become a Two Million Dollar Owner, as well as the owner of a Million Dollar Sire, with Smart Spook being the obvious candidate. Look for Spook's offspring at the fall futurities. Some have already made their mark including Ima Lil Spooky (x Ima Tori Kid), owned by Francois Gauthier and ridden by his daughter Josiane, who earned the Morning Star Performance Horse Futurity's level 4 non pro division championship. The mare, under new ownership (Ross and Delores Failor) also carried Courtney Jones to the level 4 and level 2 non pro wins at the Super Slide In Futurity in Northampton, Massachusetts. Sammy Ely won the level 4 and level 3 divisions at the Dixie Reining Horse Association Dorminy Plantation Futurity in Perry, Georgia, riding Heza Majestic Spook (x Shes A Majestic Jac) owned by Sammy and Nell Ely. Corey Hendrickson riding Spooks Pearl (x Solanos Pearl), for Sparrow Hawk Farms, won the Sandhills Slide Futurity levels 3 and 4 and David Zimmerman riding Jacs Lil Spook (x Miss Whoz Jac), owned by Newell Quarter Horses was reserve champion in both divisions and won the level 2 division at the same show. NRHA Professional and Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani rode B&L Holdings' Custom Spook (x Custom Spinderella) to the co-reserve championship at the John Deere Futurity held during the 2010 Ariat® Tulsa Reining Classic. The Spooks are certainly showing the promise of fulfilling Sternberg's dreams.

The Next Generation

Rosanne's daughter, Jessica, set a goal of her own for 2010. To qualify to ride on the British Team at WEG–and she achieved it. Jessica, 20, was selected to represent her country in the Reining Team competition. Although she wasn't interested in Reining until she was 14, Jessica has already been an NRHA Derby and NRBC non pro finalist, an NRHA European Affiliate Champion, as well as an AQHYA World Championship Show top ten finalist and just recently level 2 and 3 non pro division champion in the Conquistador Whiz Derby at the Ariat Tulsa Reining Classic.

When not preparing for a major reining event, Jessica attends the University of London, Royal Holloway, the Business Management degree she is studying for could be very useful should she follow in her mother's footsteps in the reining horse industry.

As for Rosanne, her riding has been curtailed since she began building the new state-of-the-art Sterling Ranch facility in 2007. However, this overachiever plans on getting back in the saddle and show pen in the near future. An NRHA Executive Committee member, as well as a great ambassador and proponent of the sport of Reining, Sternberg will continue to build on her already successful breeding program and work on her next million dollars as an owner–on both sides of the Atlantic.
